Niels G. Johnson
SALINAS
Niels Gilbert Johnson, 81, of Salinas, passed away Monday, January 28, 2013, at home with his family by his side. He was born September 4, 1931, in Manhattan, NY.
At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Army and served 30 years with distinction, including tours during the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. In the mid-50's, during a peacetime tour in Korea, he met and married his wife of 50 years, Lee, with whom he had two children. His last posting was at Fort Hunter Liggett, and he retired in 1978 at Fort Ord with the rank of Master Sergeant. After his retirement he continued to hold odd jobs just to keep busy, the last one with Enterprise Rent A Car as a hiker.
The family would like to thank the following for the wonderful care given to Mr. Johnson over the last several years: UCSF Medical Center Transplant Services, the VA Healthcare System at Palo Alto and Ft. Ord, Dr. Gopal Krishna and his associates at Central Coast Nephrology, Dr. Steven Harrison and the staff at Eden Valley Care Center, Choice Home Health Care, Central Coast VNA Hospice, and Community Caregivers.
He was preceded in death by his son, Chris in 1989 and his wife, Lee in 2011.
He is survived by his daughter, Johanna Young and her husband, Jerry both of Gonzales; three grandchildren, Jennifer of Gonzales, David of Marina, and Cheryl and her fiance, Justin Gonzalez of Sacramento.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 8 , 2013 from 1 to 9 p.m., at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas, CA 93905.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 11 a.m., at the Healey Mortuary Chapel.
Burial with full military honors will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, CA 93907, where he will be laid to rest with his wife and son.
Contributions in Mr. Johnson's memory may be made to Eden Valley Care Center in Soledad or the Central Coast VNA Hospice team.
