Slezak, William J.
William J. Slezak Feb. 27, 1946 - July 12, 2016 Salinas William J Slezak, 70, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Stanford Hospital, surrounded by his family after a short but fierce battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He leaves his wife of 46 years, Pat Slezak; his sons and spouses, Mark and Tracey & Doug and Heidi, and his much loved grandchildren, Madison, Sydney, Avila (A.J.) and Theo. Bill was preceded in death by his grandson, Tommy, in 2009. All who knew him saw how his face lit up when around any child. His sons and friends consider him to be a role model as a husband, father, and friend. Bill was born Feb. 27, 1946 and raised in Queens, NY, the son of William and Anna Slezak; with siblings, Dolores Donovan and Edward Slezak. His love of playing any kind of sport began early with stickball in the streets of New York followed by basketball, track and his favorite, baseball which he played into college. After graduating from Most Holy Trinity High School in 1963, he attended Pace University graduating with a degree in Business Administration. Books and knowledge were not the only things he obtained from college, meeting his lifelong partner Patricia Ann Hornickel there. In 1968, he was drafted into the Army and was deployed to Vietnam, where he earned a Purple Heart. Upon his return, he married Pat in 1970 and within a few years started a family. His career as a CPA eventually took him away from the Big Apple, where he moved to Kentucky and New Jersey before finally settling in Salinas. During his working career, his background in finance allowed him to work for a variety of produce companies prior to working as the CFO for Slautterback Corporation. His love for people and sense of humor made him an employee favorite in the workplace, and also allowed him to excel throughout his career. Bill's main hobby was anything that involved his family. He always had a "family first" approach to life. Bill coached his kids in sports, led a Cub Scout group, volunteered for the Catholic Workers, Sacred Heart Church, served as President on the board of Catholic Charities and, for the last 20 years enjoyed time at their cabin in Pine Mountain Lake. Bill stayed active and in shape with early morning runs in the dark that eventually led to his completing the Big Sur and New York Marathons. He didn't take life too seriously, as illustrated on the golf course, where the mulligans flowed freely. After retiring, Bill volunteered by driving veterans to the VA hospital. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1 Railroad Ave., Spreckels, CA 93962; followed by a reception in the hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's name to the Stanford Bone Marrow Transplant Team, P.O. Box 20466, Stanford, CA 94309 or on-line at 866.543.0243. or to Hospice Giving Foundation at 80 Garden Court #201, Monterey, CA 93940, 831-333-9023. Funeral arrangements by Struve and Laporte.
