Dorothy J. Cowan
Dorothy J. Cowan, 89, passed away at home after a brief illness on Thursday, May 22, 2014. She was surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy was born Nov. 11, 1924 in San Rafael.
She was married to her husband, Joe Cowan, until his passing in 2006. They were married for 62 years and had one daughter, Shirley Cowan.
She was raised on the San Quentin prison grounds where her father served as assistant warden. Dorothy and Joe got married while he was on weekend leave from the Navy and their honeymoon was a train trip to San Clemente heading back to base along with lots of other soldiers. She enjoyed being a homemaker, and always had her house in order in case company arrived. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, sewing, and attending Bible study.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Cowan, and her daughter, Shirley.
Dorothy is survived by her grandchildren, Jean (John) Lawry, Larry (Dawn) Cowan, and Toni Bettencourt. She had six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She loved her family and enjoyed it when her house was full, and enjoyed spoiling the little ones.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901.
