Francis (Frank) Louis Sauter, 96, of Salinas, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2013. He was born May 21, 1916, in Fonda, Iowa to Louis P. and Mary H. (Kelly) Sauter.
The family moved to Greene, N.Y. in 1925. In 1939, the family again moved, this time to Pomona, where his parents remained until they died. Frank served in the U.S. Navy
. He was a police officer
for the Pomona Police Department. In 1950, he met Katherine, they married and moved to Salinas in 1951 when he became an instructor for the Department of Corrections in Soledad.
Frank was a resident of the Salinas Steinbeck Commons for more than 30 years. He loved square dancing, going to Tacopa Hot Springs, hiking around Burney Falls and enjoyed Dixieland concerts. He was an avid poker player and a huge fan of the Giants, 49ers, A's, Raiders, Notre Dame's Fighting Irish and the local high school sports programs as well. Frank was a member of Sacred Heart Church where he attended mass daily until his health prevented him to do so. He was devoted to the rosary. Friends will remember him most for his wit and sense of humor.
Frank was preceded in death by his four siblings, Joseph, John, Mary and Kathleen. He is survived by his lifelong companion, Katherine D. Sauter; children, Margaret "Peggy" Hedin of Royal Oaks, Mary A. Layus of Carmichael, Dan Sauter of Corralitos and Susie Layus (Art) of Royal Oaks; grandchildren, Lisa Layus, Kevin Hedin, Lillian Layus, Elliott Layus (Amy), Shelly Sauter and Marc "Mookie" Layus; and four great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Edgar Castellanos, the Hollister VNA & Hospice and caregiver/cheerleader Maria "Maggie" Zappavigna for their help in his last days.
Funeral Mass will be held today at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 22 Stone St., Salinas, CA 93901.
Burial will be on Monday, February 25, 2013, at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine.
