Helen Kasavan, 86, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Saturday, February 23, 2013. She was born November 3, 1926 in Los Angeles, the youngest offspring to Philip and Eve Singer.
Helen grew up and went to high school in Los Angeles, and became a bookkeeper for Jefferson Cleaners for five years before meeting Herman Kasavan, getting married and making Salinas their home.
One of her older brothers, Morry, came down from UC Berkeley to see Cal play in the Rose Bowl in the late 40's. Morry brought his roommate, Herman Kasavan, down with him to see the Big Game and that's how Helen met her husband.
They married and lived in Berkeley for a short time and then moved back to Herman's hometown, Salinas. Herman started the firm which later became Kasavan & Pope, CPA's, while Helen was traditional and dedicated housewife, mother and later, grandmother.
She was a member of Temple Beth El, Temple Beth El Sisterhood, and charter member of Corral de Tierra Country Club. She loved playing golf, being outdoors, going for walks, spending time with relatives and friends and helping people. She felt Salinas and the Monterey Peninsula was the most beautiful place on earth and lucky to live here.
Helen had three children, Patricia, Robert (Lesley) Kasavan and Danette (Mark) Cossgrove; along with three grandchildren, Kevin Crossgrove, Sarah Kasavan and Katie Crossgrove.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901.
