James "Jim" Cherry

James "Jim" Cherry passed away on August 22, 2013 in Salinas, CA. The oldest son of Raymond and Mary Cherry, he was born in Xenia, Ohio in 1930. He spent his childhood on his parents' farm, and as a teenager raised champion sheep, showing them at local County and State fairs. After high school graduation, he attended Monmouth College in Illinois, graduating with a degree in Geology. Then he joined the Navy "to see the world" as military enlistment was a requirement. The USS ESTES ship was his tour of duty for most of the four years he served.

Returning to civilian life, he accepted a job with the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office in Washington, DC which gave him more opportunities to travel. He was actively involved with mapping and charting the ocean in many parts of the world. Iceland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Australia were some of the places he was able to visit.

In 1968 Jim became an instructor in the Foreign Training Division of the Navy Oceanographic Office. He taught foreign and U.S. Navy officers mapping, charting and geodesy. His employment enabled him to live in Maryland/Washington, D.C., Mississippi, and finally California where he retired from the Naval Postgraduate School.

In 1959 Jim married Virginia Fiori at the First Baptist Church in Washington, DC. They have three children, Robert (Michelle), John, and Jean and four grandchildren. He also leaves a brother Bruce (Yvonne).

After retirement Jim and his wife continued to travel on cruises and tours of foreign countries plus Canada and the U.S. He was a volunteer at the Point Sur State Historic Park Lighthouse, and also at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He was actively involved with his local church wherever he lived.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday,August 30 at 2:00 PM at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 315 E. Alvin Drive, Salinas, CA 93906.
