Joanne R. Karcich
Joanne Richling Karcich died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, February 28, 2013. She was born May 19, 1922 in Spalding, NE, the eldest of six children.
Joanne attended business school in Tulsa, OK before moving to Salinas in 1946. For almost 70 years Joanne was an active member of the Salinas community. She held a number of administrative jobs in Salinas and retired in 1984 from Pacific Fruit Express. She was a long time member of the Del Rey Oaks Moose Club
; a supporting member of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial and a Gold Star Mother. She held a number of offices in the American Legion Auxiliary Monterey Chapter 694. Joanne was also a member of the Catholic Daughter's Association. Until last July she lived independently at her home in the Sherwood Lake Mobile Home Park where she participated in the Red Hats and various social activities associated with the park. Joanne loved ballroom dancing and while her husband, Walter, was alive they went dancing weekly at the Moose Club, the Salinas Senior's Center and were members of the Pendango Dance Club.
During the last six months of her life, Joanne made her home at the Madonna Manor assisted living facility in Salinas. She very much enjoyed this new lifestyle and the opportunity to make new friends, join in activities and remained alert and involved. Beverly and Eric would like to give special thanks to the staff at Madonna Manor for the loving care she received.
Joanne was preceded in death by her son, Robert L. Bennett who was killed in Vietnam in 1969; her husband, Walter J. Karcich who died in 1998; her parents, two sisters and a brother.
Joanne is survived by her daughter, Beverly Bennett Holstein (Eric) of The Netherlands; her brother, Gene Richling (Joan) of San Angelo, TX; her sister, Octavia Ennis (Don) of Citrus Heights; and her step-children, Walter Karcich (Sarah) of Salinas, Karen Searson (Larry) of Magalia and Charles Karcich (Florinda) of Medford, OR.
Joanne will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but we celebrate her long life and the smiles she shared so readily. Her mobility had diminished over the past couple of years and she is no doubt now waltzing once again, among the stars, with her dear Walter, and rejoicing in the reunion with her beloved son, Bobbie.
