Liz Angelica Sanchez

Liz Angelica Sanchez, 72, of Salinas, peacefully passed away Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Liz was born March 5, 1941, in Zacatecas, Mexico.

She was a teacher in Mexico before immigrating to the United States in the early 1980's. She worked as an educator and community liaison for nearly three decades in Salinas, at El Sausal Middle School and Alisal High School. Among her notable career accomplishments was a weekly parents' group she founded and coordinated at El Sausal school.

Liz was especially passionate about helping her community. She served on the board of directors of many community organizations, including Hartnell College, the League of United Latin American Citizens, Clinica de Salud, Caminos del Arte and Fiestas Patrias. She also was a counselor at the Sun Street Center, ran for Salinas City Council in the late 1990's and wrote a column for El Sol for many years. She was often honored for her community service, including being recognized as a LULAC Woman of the Year in 2004 and a Champion of the Arts by the Arts Council for Monterey County in 2013.

In addition to her community activism, she was devoted to her family. She especially enjoyed hosting family gatherings at her home, with her children and many grandchildren.

She is survived by her 13 children: Gema Sanchez, Mariano Adame, Tony Sanchez, Yadira Romo, Jose Sanchez, Sarah Endres, Bernie Sanchez Sr., Angelica Ocampo, Mario Sanchez, Ramon Sanchez, Cristal Wilcox, Frank Sanchez Jr. and Susan Sanchez; 49 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Berta Nestor, Rosa Espinoza and Leticia Rodriguez, and brother, Miguel Sanchez.

Liz was preceded in death by her daughter, Lupita; son, Edgar and brother, Antonio Sanchez.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas, CA 93905.

A Rosary Vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 424 Towt St., Salinas, CA 93905.

A Funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at St. Mary of the Nativity Church.

Burial to follow services at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, 850 Abbott St., Salinas, CA 93901.
