Michael P. Thune Sr.(1958 - 2013)

SALINAS

Michael P. Thune, Sr.

Michael Peter Thune, Sr., longtime resident of Salinas, passed away with family at his side on Saturday, January 5, 2013, in Salinas, at the age of 54. He was born September 24, 1958, in Rochester, Minnesota to M. Richard Thune and Darlene Hilke Thune. He was the youngest of four children with two sisters, Elizabeth and Patricia, and brother, Richard.

Michael graduated from Faribault High School and attended the local trade school, studying Drafting. He was raised in a very sports-minded family playing football, basketball, baseball and spent many hours fishing in Minnesota's 10,000 lakes. Wanderlust struck whereupon he loaded up his car and drove until his car quit, landing in Salinas. He brought with him his love of sports, adopting the San Francisco 49'ers, the San Francisco Giants and the San Jose Sharks as his new hometown teams.

There, he met and married his first wife, Lois Prola. They welcomed two sons, Michael, Jr. and Jessie Aaron. Some years later, he met and married his second wife, Colleen McBride and again had two more children, his first and only daughter, Stephanie Nicole and a third son, Ryan Nicholas. Michael worked for the County of Monterey, in the Facilities and Construction Department, honing his skills in repair, maintenance and woodworking.

After he retired, it allowed him the opportunity to watch Stephanie and Ryan participate in sports. He was able to dedicate many hours to the North Salinas Vikings Football Club and spent many happy hours watching football, baseball, basketball, cheer, track, roller and ice hockey. In addition to sports, he also loved country music, reading John Grishom and Tom Clancy novels, bowling, and he even coached his son, Ryan's roller hockey team for a year. He was a devoted father, son, brother and uncle and was truly amazing in his ability to overcome life's adversities. He possessed an incredible will to live and despite it all, he took true joy in his children.

The family would like to express their gratitude for the wonderful care he received from the staff at Windsor Gardens and at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital throughout these last difficult months.

He is survived by his mother, Darlene Hilke Thune of MN; sister, Elizabeth Thune of MN; his children, sons, Michael Thune, Jr., and Ryan Thune, and daughter, Stephanie Thune, all of Salinas. He is also survived by many other loving family members and friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his brother, Richard; his beloved son, Jessie, and more recently, his father, Richard and sister, Patricia.
