Sophie O. Arias(1923 - 2013)

Sophie O. Arias

Sophie O. Arias passed away peacefully with dignity and grace with her loving family by her side on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, in Salinas, at the age of 89. She was a very sweet, loving person who was loved and admired by many.

Sophie was born December 23, 1923, to Mateo Ocampo and Maria de Jesus Lomeli de Ocampo in Los Angeles, where she lived for nine years before moving to Monterey. She graduated from Monterey High School in 1941 before working in the sardine canneries of historic Cannery Row. When the sardine canneries closed, Sophie moved to Salinas to work at Frank Raiders Tomato Cannery. She resided in Salinas for the rest of her life.

Shortly after moving to Salinas, Sophie met Eddie Arias. They married on October 5, 1946 and have been happily married for 66 years living in Salinas and raising their family.

Sophie lived a happy life and did what she wanted from the time she was a young woman, which is impressive in itself because she grew up in a time when women thought they didn't have very many options. She made her own options. In 1943, Sophie convinced three of her sisters, Ventura, Mary, and Celia, to pool their money with hers and purchased a home together. This was not a common practice for young single women of this era. The home was on Commission Street in Salinas and was the first of many homes and income properties Sophie acquired throughout her life. At the time she and her sisters were raising their younger brother and sister, Tony and Connie.

Sophie belonged to the Tapatio Social Club, a fundraising organization that would raise money for needed causes. Sophie worked as a Supervisor for Spiegel Foods which was later bought out by Dalgety Foods, which was later bought out by Simplot Frozen Foods, retiring after 30 years. She was very active with the Teamsters Union and was a Shop Stewart.

Sophie was preceded in death by her father, Mateo Ocampo; mother, Maria de Jesus Lomeli de Ocampo; stepmother, Nellie; brother, Francisco; sisters, Francis, Alice, Ventura, Aurora; brother, Tony; and great-grandson, Adam Arias.

She is survived by her husband, Eddie; children, Eddie Jr. (Louise), Beatrice (Bud) and Elizabeth; grandchildren, Eddie III (Lila), Adam, Michael, Marie (Mark), Nicole (Ed), Buddy, Stacy (Justin), Jason and Alyssa; great-grandchildren, Jordan (Tom), Eddie IV (Nadine), Devin, Gavin, Taylor, Nicolas, Eddie and Natalie; great-great-grandchildren, Veronica, Karalina and Bella; sisters, Mary, Celia and Consuelo; and brothers, Javier (Marianne), Mateo and Adam (Diana).

The Arias Family would like to give a special thank you to Sophie's primary Dr. Norman Rosen and his staff. We would also like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital and Natividad Medical Center.
