Ronald Carl Gularte
Born at the old Salinas Romie Lane Hospital on July 7, 1937 and departed January 15, 2013.
Ronald Carl Gularte, PhD., P.E., 75 years of age, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, January 15, 2013, in Crofton, MD. He was born to Louis Lawrence and Dorothy (Rauch) Gularte. He and his wife, Alice, have resided in Severna Park, MD for the last 33 years.
Ron graduated from Gonzales High School in 1955 and Hartnell College in 1962. He helped his father with farming, and later became a machinist at his grandfather's Rauch Machine Shop on Market Street. Because of his love of learning and all things mechanical, he continued his education at the University of Southern California, receiving his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1966 followed by a Master's of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1969. He started his engineering career in Los Angeles. He was involved in early designs by computer methods. During this period he was granted two U.S. Patents which were used in the space industry. In 1969 they moved east to continue his education. He received a Professional Degree in Ocean Engineering in 1972 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. This was followed by his receiving a Doctorate in Ocean Engineering from the University of Rhode Island. While living on Cape Cod he was an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. In 1979 Ron and Alice moved to Annapolis, MD where he was an Assistant Professor at the U.S. Naval Academy. He retired from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Dept. of Defense, Washington DC. He published numerous research papers.
He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, and Sigma Xi. He enjoyed anything mechanical, old cars, and collecting wine and wine related pieces. He especially loved his Model T Ford and his father's Chrysler 300L.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Alice (Tharp) Gularte; his brothers, Francis Gularte of Ventura and George Rauch of Salinas and his nieces and nephews; especially nephews, Gary, Greg, and Gavin Gularte. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, David, Louis, and Jonathan.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2013 from 1:00 p.m.to 5:00 p.m., at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901.
Graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, CA 93907.
