Albert DeCarli, 87, of Salinas, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012. He was born December 16, 1924, to John and Rosie DeCarli in Gerra Piano, Switzerland. The family immigrated to this country when Albert was four and eventually settled in the Mission District of Soledad.
He attended the Mission School and graduated from Gonzales High School in 1943. He married the love of his life, Doreen Scolari in 1947. Three children were to follow: Mike, Gary, and Jeannette. Al and Doreen would have been married 65 years this July.
Albert went to work at Soledad Correctional Facility in 1952 and worked his way through the ranks from guard to Sergeant to Lieutenant to Counselor. After 16 years, he left the prison and bought the store in Soledad that eventually became known as DeCarli Appliance and Stereo. In 1980, Al and Doreen moved to the Pine Canyon area of Salinas, and in 1989, Albert sold the Soledad store and retired.
Albert belonged to the Knights of Columbus, was president of the Soledad Chamber of Commerce in 1973, was a trustee for the Soledad Unified School District, was on the board of the Soledad Mission Recreation District, and was a member of St. Joseph's parish in Spreckels. He was also very active with the Swiss American Club.
Albert's work ethic and willingness to work long hours was legendary, both before and after retirement, and yet he found the time to be an extraordinary family man.
Albert was preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Rosie; his brother, Ray and his sister, Annie Vosti.
Albert is survived by his wife, Doreen; son, Mike and his wife, Sandy of Oakhurst; son, Gary of Salinas; daughter, Jeannette Hobbs and her husband, Ken of Salinas; brother, Eddie DeCarli of Salinas; grandchildren, Tara Depue of San Jose, Michael Hobbs and his wife, Kelly of Northport, New York, Jamila DeCarli of San Diego, Ashley DeCarli of Salinas, and Rebecca Brokaw and husband, Brandon of Oakhurst; great-grandchildren, Kale and Kai Hobbs, Jordan Depue, Benjamin and Alexandra Brokaw; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend its sincere appreciation to the U.N.A. Hospice and to Santo Nino Care home owners, Rodriga and Dom Fontejon and their staff.
