Dorothy was born in Monterey on August 27, 1914, and was a lifetime resident of the area. Her parents were Fred Silva and the former Rose Bento. She loved to read, and she had a vast knowledge of local and California history and she enjoyed sharing it with others.

In 1970 Dorothy married Edward Hanon. Dorothy and Ed enjoyed traveling and square dancing, and in their later years they hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back. Ed passed away in 2003.
