Elmo "Elmer" Lester Lanini, 93, of Salinas, passed away Sunday evening, January 13, 2013, in Salinas. He was born November 5, 1919 in the house on the ranch, where he farmed during his years prior to World War II and after the war.
Elmer attended a local one room school (Graves) near his home and graduated from Salinas Union High School.
Serving in the Army Field Artillery for a year, Elmer then became a cadet in the Army Air Corp., where he became a bombardier in a B24 in England and served on 31 missions during WW II.
After returning from the War, he met and married his wife, Roeine (Resch) Lanini and they had one daughter, Sharan.
He was an active member of the Salinas Elks Lodge No. 614 serving as Exalted Ruler (1962-1963), District Deputy (1970-1971), State President (1983-1984), and Grand Lodge Trustee (1993-1997). Also contributing to his community in many ways, such as: serving on the County Grand Jury, Trustee of the Graves School District, Director of the California Rodeo Salinas, and the Salinas Rural Fire District.
He was preceded in death by Lillian Lanini (Corda), Frank, Henry, Annie (Riehl), and his parents.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Roeine Lanini; daughter, Sharan Lanini; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, January 17, 2013, at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 18, 2013, at Struve and Laporte Chapel.
Entombment will follow with military honors at Garden of Memories Mausoleum, 850 Abbott St., Salinas, CA 93901.
