Lawrence R. Head
Lawrence R. Head, 94, passed away Monday, November 19, 2012. He was born at 80 4th Street in Spreckels on February 22, 1918, and was a lifetime resident of the Salinas Valley, moving into Salinas in 1958. He was a graduate of Spreckels Elementary School, Salinas High School, and Salinas Junior College (Hartnell).
Included in Lawrence's family were his cousin, Ruth Garrison Abbott, the wife of Chester Forester Abbott; grandson of Salinas founding pioneer, Carlisle Stuart Abbott; and also Paul Mehringer, a former Chief of the Salinas Fire Dept.
Lawrence was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church from 1931 to 1999. He did carpentry work to build the original John Street building while he was in high school. In 1999, he joined the congregation of the Cypress Church.
Lawrence was employed by Spreckels Sugar Co. for 46 years from 1936 to 1982, along with 10 of his relatives and relatives-in-law. Lawrence retired when they closed the plant.
Lawrence was a WW II veteran, joining the U.S. Navy in 1942 as a Seabee, serving in the Station Force at Port Hueneme CA through the four war years, and retiring as a Naval Officer in the Naval Reserves after another 32 years.
Lawrence signed on with the California Rodeo Salinas in 1949 and continued his service for 61 years, until 2010, 44 years as Director of Parking, and 17 years in the Information Booth.
Lawrence lent his wonderful tenor voice as an active member of the SPEBSQSA, a barbershopper from 1972 to 2006, active for 34 years before becoming inactive. He was first a member of the Salinas Chapter Green Belt Chorus, and then a member of the Monterey Chapter Cypressaires Chorus.
From 1978 to 1993, Lawrence bowled in a league at the Valley Center Bowl.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his father and mother, Lula and Charles Wilson Head, and his two brothers, Earl Chester Head and Charles Frederick Head. Lawrence was married for 31 years to the former Julia Mehringer (nie: Head, Miller)
Lawrence leaves behind sister, Elizabeth, Betty, Wegner, and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth, Betty, Mehringer Romine (former owner of the Style Shop in Valley Center), and Verneda Norris Mehringer. He also leaves daughter, Judy Lyman; son, Robert Head; six grandchildren, Judith and Richard Lyman/granddaughter-in-law, Deborah, Adam, Rose, Joshua, and Amy Grace Strickler; and two great-grandchildren, Alanna and Howard Lawrence R. Lyman, who carries on his name.
Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., in the Cypress Community Church, 681 Monterey Salinas Hwy, Salinas, CA 93908.
