Margaret Mauro Obituary

Margaret Mauro

Margaret Mauro, 99, of Salinas, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 30, 2013. She was born February 2, 1914, in Chicago to Catherine Midonna and Leonard DeMarco, both originally from Italy.

Margaret was a Salinas resident for 63 years, during which time she and her husband owned and operated a grocery store, Mauro's Highway Market. After retiring from the store, the couple enjoyed traveling together, including trips to Europe and the Holy Lands, and also several cruises and vacations with their family.

Margaret was a parishioner of Madonna Del Sasso Catholic Church and a member of the parish altar society, the Catholic Daughters of America, and Angela's Angels. She was also a member of the Over the Rainbow Club and the Sons of Italy and, for several years, was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Margaret's greatest joy in life was her family. She loved to play cards, host family gatherings and visit with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved baseball and was an avid Chicago White Sox fan when she lived in Chicago and an Oakland A's fan after moving to California. She was the heart of her close-knit family, and her quiet strength, generosity and kindness will always be remembered.

A widow for 26 years, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Joseph Mauro; and her seven siblings, Joseph DeMarco, Sam DeMarco, Phyllis Cole, Peter DeMarco, Angelina Lioi, John Meluso and Rosemarie Stone.

Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Marie (John) Viarengo and Lois (Carl) Pratt; four grandchildren, Robert (Laura) Viarengo, Steve (Kathy) Viarengo, Christy (Timothy) Peters and Michael Pratt; and six great-grandchildren, Lauren, Grace, Catherine, Julia, Owen and Joe.

The family would like to gratefully thank the staff of Songbird Care Home, especially Editha Aspuria and Gloria Vergara, for their loving and gentle care of Margaret during the last 4-1/2 months; and also the VNA Hospice, especially Angie and Isabelle.

Funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., at Madonna Del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Dr., Salinas.

Entombment will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to VNA Hospice, 8 Quail Run Circle, Ste. 101, Salinas, CA 93907.
