Mary Diane Eckhart Shigo
Mary Diane Eckhart Shigo, 68, a lifelong resident of Salinas, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at her home in Arroyo Seco. Mary was born Nov. 10, 1945 in Salinas, to Howard and Helen Eckhart.
She attended high school at Palma High School and graduated in 1963. Mary went on to earn a degree in English from the College of Notre Dame in Belmont. Teaching was Mary's life work. She was a beloved kindergarten teacher at Spreckels Elementary school for 20 years. Mary was also a parishioner at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spreckels and more recently Soledad Mission. Mary spent much of her time supporting her husband Tom, a retired builder of custom homes in Monterey County. Mary was an avid reader. She volunteered her time and efforts freely to those in need. Mary's final project with husband Tom was putting in a pool and a new guest house for family and friends to enjoy. Mary will be remembered for her gentile spirit and the heroic kindness she showed toward others.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Helen; aunts, Bernadine Charette of Salinas and Dorothy Heer of Salinas; and her brother, Pete of Salinas.
Mary is survived by her husband, Tom; brother, Jim of Salinas; brother, Ric of Chico; son, Phil Shigo (Kerri) of Seattle, WA; son, Peter Shigo (Lissa) of Ladera Ranch; daughter, Sarah Gordon (Justin) of Sacramento; daughter, Jenny Shigo of Hayward; 11 grandchildren, Anthony Ponce de Leon of Cupertino, Sheridan of Ireland, Jack and Jett Shigo of Ladera Ranch, Kate, Ella, Claire and Will Shigo of Seattle, WA, Hunter and Tate Gordon of Sacramento.
Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at St. Joseph Church, 1 Railroad Ave., Spreckels, CA 93962.
