Mel Schumacher Obituary
Mel Schumacher

Salinas

Mel Schumacher, 87, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, he touched the lives of many in Salinas and around California through his work as a teacher, a school principal and later as an educator including more than two decades spent in the Monterey County school system.

Mel was born February 1, 1926, in Milwaukee, WI but enlisted in the Navy when he was 17 during World War II as a medical corpsman on an aircraft carrier. He participated in numerous battles between 1944 and 1945. After the war he married Marcella Weinstein and moved to California to attend USC, living largely in the Los Angeles area before settling in Salinas in 1965.

Mel had two guiding stars - provide for the family and contribute to his community. Not only was he a teacher, but he often worked two or three jobs at a time to earn income and even though his hours were long, he rarely missed a game of catch with his son, acapella recital with his daughter or a play in which his child was performing. He was a proud member of Temple Beth-El serving on boards and various committees particularly those involving fund raising. He delivered Meals on Wheels to those in need and every year took great pride in ringing Christmas bells as a volunteer for the Salvation Army. For those who were shut in or invalids, Mel inevitably stopped by to have a word or called regularly just to check in.

His interests were wide ranging: he read; he traveled; he loved music; and he cooked. With his wife, the love of his life of 61 years, he traveled the world and late into his 70's he was seeing new parts of the globe venturing around such places as the bottom of South America and deep into the Amazon. When his traveling stopped, he continued to seek out the world through reading, through television and lastly through the Internet.

Though his beloved Marcy died in 2009, he is survived by his son, Barry Schumacher, his daughters, Anna Schumacher and Sari Schumacher; his daughter-in-law, Kyna Rubin and by seven grandchildren, Mimi Salazar, Izell Salazar, Alex Schumacher, Caitlin Hober, Mark Schumacher, Aaron Schumacher and David Schumacher.

His family and his extended community will miss him deeply.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 1:00 p.m., at Temple Beth El, 1212 Riker St., Salinas, CA 93901.

Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery, 850 Abbott St., Salinas, CA 93901.
