Peter Martinez, 81, resident of Gonzales, passed away Monday, December 31, 2012, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. He was born June 26, 1931, in Reedley.
Peter was a life-long resident of Gonzales where he was well known in his community and remembered for his boxing career. He was the Monterey County Feather weight champion and became pro by the time he was 18 years old. Peter was a contender for state featherweight champion but due to a car accident his boxing career was ended. He retired from Spreckels Sugar Co. after 24 years and volunteered with the Monterey County Food Bank for several years. He enjoyed watching the SF Giants play, reading the newspaper, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Emma Martinez; daughters, Laura Martinez and Merry Martinez; his brothers, David Martinez and Sam Martinez; and various grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rosary recital will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2013, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m., all at St. Theodore's Church, 116 S. Belden St., Gonzales, CA 93926.
An Inurnment will follow at a later date at the Gonzales District Cemetery, Hwy 101 S., Gonzales, CA 93926.
