Russell Leroy Johnson
Russell Leroy Johnson, 83, of Salinas, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2012, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital peacefully and free from pain with his daughter, Merry Pratt by his side. He was born April 15, 1929, to Shala and Russell Johnson of Minnesota St. Paul.
Russ was an honorable man who loved his country and served it faithfully for 27 years in the United States Army following his graduation from West Point in 1951. He was quick to tell a joke and had a passion for both learning and teaching others. He especially loved teaching English and coaching swimming. Many lives were positively affected as a result.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, in May 2011; and his grandson, Sean Tupper, in March 2011.
Those left to honor his memory include his five children and his three grandchildren, Tara Pratt, Tyler Pratt, and Blaine Russell Dyas.
At his request, no services will be held. Russ will be cremated and his ashes will rest at West Point with those of his beloved Gloria.
Memorial donations in his honor may be made to the West Point Military Academy, Gift Operations, West Point Association of Graduates, 698 Mills Road, West Point, New York 10996.
