Marian Magdalen Bell Lindsay

Marian Magdalen Bell Lindsay passed away peacefully with her family at her side Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, just shy of 100 years old. She was born July 10, 1914 to Michael and Wilhelmina Bell in Minneapolis, MN. She and her twin sister were among eight children of whom Marian was the last survivor.

Marian was an outgoing, active and compassionate person. She was an avid tennis player and ice skater who practiced on her family's backyard frozen pond.

As an adult she lived in Spokane, WA where she met and married Waverly "Skeet" Lindsay. Skeet loved everything about her, especially her genuine innocence, affectionately calling her his "Gracie Allen". She and Skeet owned the Shack Restaurant in Spokane and later moved to California where they owned and operated the Park Motel in Fresno and the Downtowner Motel in Salinas. Marian was also a secretary for Holewinski and Blevins Architects in Salinas.

Marian had a wonderful disposition always looking for the good in people. She seldom criticized anyone and is quoted as saying "We are all God's children, even the worst of them!"

She spent her elder years at Madonna Manor in Salinas where she was an avid bridge player and organist. She was a member of the Active Seniors, Madonna del Sasso Church and the Catholic Daughters of America, delivered for Meals on Wheels and volunteered for the Salinas Library System.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary (Tom) Sgheiza of Prunedale, Margie (Gordon) Stallings of Merced and Ann Rhine of Tucson, AZ; as well as her grandchildren, Jamie (Matt) Panziera, Brian (Stacy) Sgheiza, Lindsay (Joel) Dickson, John (Brandi) Stallings, Greg (Rich) Yedding, Linda Myers, Steven Stallings and Jennifer Brandt. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Whispering Pines Inn of Hollister for the loving and excellent care they have provided her over the past six years, Dr. Laura Stampleman for her loving care and especially Doris Drost who has been a loyal friend and caregiver to Marian for more than 15 years.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Struve and Laporte, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901.

Memorial donations are suggested to be made to the VNA Hospice, 5 Lower Ragsdale Dr., Monterey, CA 94940.
