Leo Lanini


Leo Lanini, 81, of Salinas, passed away March 18, 2014 in Cedar Hills, Utah.

Leo attended Sacred Heart School, Salinas Union High School and Hartnell College. After graduating from Hartnell, he went to work for Martella Printing and Salinas Press. He worked as a printing press operator.

Leo also served in the U.S. Army stationed at Beale Air Force Base and Alaska from 1960 to 1962.

After retiring, he liked to be known as "Buggynut" because he liked to restore old buggies and he was well known by appearances in the Salinas Daily rodeo parade for many years. About a parade, Leo said that "We're not trying to bring back the past. We are trying to preserve the past at its best." He and his partner Mike Mastroianni operated a business specializing in horseless buggy weddings.

Leo is survived by his sisters, Sylvia Chlappone and brother-in-law, Hugo and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 28, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901.

Rosary will be held Friday, March 28, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Struve and Laporte Chapel.

Funeral Mass will take place Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 22 Stone St., Salinas, CA 93901.

Burial with military honors will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, CA 93907.
