Agnes C. MacDonald

Agnes Christine MacDonald passed away early Friday morning, April 4, 2014 at Eden Valley Care Center in Soledad, surrounded by her loving family. She was 97 years old.

Agnes was born in Soledad on Jan. 29, 1917, to Theodor Petersen Uldall and Minnie Hansen Uldall. She was proud of her Danish heritage. Agnes married Ralph A. MacDonald on Sept. 8, 1935. Except for the first year of marriage living in Salinas, she lived in Soledad her entire life. Ralph and Agnes were married for 35 years until his sudden passing in Nov. 1970. To her, family was the most important part of her life and she devoted herself to them.

She was the ultimate homemaker, taking great pride in her home. We loved her homemade chocolate cake with custard filling, her lemon meringue pies and her potato salad. She greatly enjoyed the hummingbirds on her patio, which she kept well nourished; and looking at the flowers in her well manicured yard. Agnes spent many hours crocheting, doing crossword and word search puzzles and playing along with Wheel of Fortune. She listened to her records or country music on her radio until it was time for the evening news. She was a member of the Hoe and Show Garden Club, Soledad United Methodist Church and for many years, a poll worker on election day. You may recall seeing her driving around town in her VW Bug with her beloved dog, Sugar beside her.

Agnes is survived by her daughter, Shirley and son-in-law, Richard Piffero of Gonzales; son, Francis and daughter-in-law, Patricia MacDonald of Concord; grandchildren, Janice Martin of Salinas, Debbie (Lee) Vinson of Shawnee, KS, Carole (Elida) Piffero of Gonzales, David (Helen) MacDonald of Moorpark, Karen (Ken) Randall of San Ramon; eight great-grandchildren, Logan & Haley Martin, Peyton, Garrett & Collin Vinson, Lauren MacDonald, Courtney & Tyler Randall; nephews, Carl (Vira) Uldall, Darold (Pat) Sunkler, Steven Lovelace; and niece, Loreen Whitney.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Arthur (Mary) Uldall; sisters, Marie (Ed) Sunkler, Mabel (Jim) Lovelace.

To her very special friends and neighbors, we thank you all for your visits and calls over the years. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Christine Ponzio for her many years of loving care and friendship. We especially thank the nurses, nursing assistants, and the staff at Eden Valley Care Center. She was treated with love, respect and dignity. She appreciated every one of you. We also sincerely thank Hospice of the Central Coast for their help.

We will always remember her beautiful, sparkling blue eyes. She will forever be in our hearts.

A private burial will be held at the Soledad Cemetery.

A reception will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 11:30 a.m., at the Gonzales American Legion Hall.

Memorials may be sent to Eden Valley Care Center or donor's favorite charity.
