Alfred Sasules, 87, lifelong resident of Monterey County, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2014, in Salinas. He was born Dec. 31, 1926, in Soledad.
As a boy, he entered into the Boy Scouts and went on to become a Boy Scout Leader.
Alfred proudly served in the U.S. Navy for more than 21 years. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. After WWII, he was a part of "Operation Crossroads". Alfred was awarded multiple service medals; the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
Alfred was a member of U.S. Navy Rifle-Pistol Team for more than 10 years, earning his distinguished Rifle-Pistol Medals. He was twice awarded the "President's 100" at Camp Perry in Ohio. In 1964, he won the "All Navy Rifle Championship".
After he retired from the Navy, his passion for shooting continued and he went on to instruct local youth and future peace officers in the art of marksmanship in Salinas and Monterey.
Alfred is survived by his loving wife, Frances W. Sasules; children, Diana (Ron) Jenkins, Lynn Barlow and James Sasules; grandchildren, Veronica Jenkins, Keesha Metsiou and Mike (Holly) Jenkins; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Dustin and Wyatt Jenkins, Matthew Valdivia and Marissa Metsiou; and great-great-grandchildren, Jerimiah and Natalie Metsiou also survive.
Burial at Sea with full Military Honors will be held at a later date in San Diego.
