William Ray Packwood, Sr., 87, passed away Friday, March 26, 2010 at home with his family by his side after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease.
He was born June 25, 1922 in Cape Fair, MO to Luther and Sarah Packwood. He moved to Salinas in 1939 but he always referred to himself as "just an old boy from Cape Fair". He served in the U.S. Army from March 1943 to November 1945 in the Pacific. After getting out of the service, he started the Black & White Cab Co. in Salinas and from there he went on to the appliance and furniture business.
His involvement in his community included Salinas Lion's Club, Monterey County Industrial Development and Junior Achievement. He was a member of Corral de Tierra Country Club for many years and served as President from 1972 to 1973. He loved his golf and gin. William was known as Billy to all of his buddies. Bill was a member and Deacon of the Southern Baptist Church.
Survivors: His wife of 62 years, Georgena "Jean" Packwood; children, Bill (Miki) Packwood of Castroville, Gloria Sectish of North Carolina and Christine (TJ) Tribolet of Yuma, AZ; grandchildren, Brian Hedberg, Alyson Grimaldo, Tyson Tribolet, Tommy Tribolet and Charles Sectish; great-grandchildren, Nathan Grimaldo, Nicholas Grimaldo and Ryan Hedberg; sisters, Patricia Loghry, Olga Hickenbotham of Salinas; brother, Charles (Janis) Packwood of Missouri. Celebration of Life: Will be held in June.
