Horace F. "Duke" Husser, M.D.

Horace F. "Duke" Husser, M.D. 96 of Salinas passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 3, 2012. He was born on March 7, 1916, Rockville Centre, New York

He was a graduate of Colgate University, Hamilton, New York, B.S., 1937; University of Rochester School of Medicine, Rochester, New York, M.D, 1941 and Internship & Residency in Surgery at University of Virginia, 1942.

He served during World War II as a Captain in the United States Army, Medical Corps; served 18 months in the South Pacific with the 3rd Engineer Special Brigade, 263rd Medical Amphibian Battalion.

While in the military, he moved to Ft. Ord, California in 1943 during World War II; bivouacked at the California Rodeo grounds prior to deployment to the South Pacific overseas; return to Salinas after beginning discharged from the United States Army in 1946 and began practicing medicine in King City, California before opening an office in Salinas where he practice for 37 years; he delivered the first baby born at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, Chief of Staff, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, 1958; in addition to his private practice, he served as the first plant doctor at the Firestone Plant in Salinas until his retirement in 1982.

He was an avid golfer; woodcarver; stamp collector; Teddy Roosevelt memorabilia collector, lector and exhibitor; he was a volunteer for the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Museum; he loved tending his rose garden and sharing his roses with others; he loved the outdoors

He held memberships and associations with American Medical Association, California Medical Association, Monterey County Medical Association, American Academy of Physician & Surgeons, Founding member of Corral de Tierra County Club; Theodore Roosevelt Association, Colgate University Alumni Association, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, and the Elks Club.

Predeceased in death in 2002 by his wife of 62 years, Mary Aline Scott Husser

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Wayne & Maureen Lavengood, Salinas; Allen & Marilyn Stream Salinas; John & Esther Husser Cedartown, GA; and James & Sheila Husser Watsonville; grandchildren: Megan A. Lavengood, Elizabeth R. Creech and her husband Zeke Creech; Brian A. Stream and his wife, Heidi; Mary Katherine Simmons and her husband Earle; John Scott Husser, Jr. and his wife Sarah; Peter J. Husser, and Paul S. Husser; great-grandchildren: Katherine Ayden Hollingsworth Creech, Elizabeth Redmond Ransom Creech, Margaret Aline Simmons and Helen Robbins Husser.

Visitation will be held today, Tuesday November 6, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, 93901.

Rosary will be held today, Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at 7:00 pm in the Struve and Laporte Chapel.

Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Railroad Ave. and Spreckles Blvd. Spreckles, CA 93962.

Memorial contributions may be made to Colgate University; Villa Serra Employees' Fund; Visiting Nurses Association of the Central - Hospice, and St. Joseph's Indian School.
