Bertha Netto Daly

Bertha Netto Daly, 104, of Gonzales, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2012, at home. She was born in San Jose on December 26, 1907, to Mary and Anthony Netto.

"Birdie", as she was lovingly known, was the fourth of their five children. Her family moved to Hollister when she was three years old and she attended the Rancho San Justo School.

Birdie married her beloved husband, Ben, and they moved to Gonzales in 1954. Always a hard worker, she worked for the canneries in Hollister, for the Asgrow Seed Company in Gonzales and for the Monterey County Hospital (now Natividad Medical Center) in Salinas from which she retired in 1972.

After her retirement, she continued to stay active in her community by volunteering at the Monterey County Swiss Rifle Club, the Senior Citizens of Gonzales and the Gonzales American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 81. Birdie was known as a great baker and was proud to spearhead the Memorial Day Annual Bake Sale with all profits benefiting the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Palo Alto. Birdie was a deeply religious woman who practiced her faith. She appreciated those who came to visit with her. She loved her little dog, Coco.

Birdie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ben; her parents and her siblings, May, Rita, Rose and George.

She is survived by her nephew, Dennis Cangiamila (Maggie) of Australia and their children, Robert and Lisa Jane and by her niece, Charlene (Joe) Valente and their children, Michael and Michelle.

Family and friends offer heartfelt gratitude to Corri Empleo for her unfailing devotion and care during the last four years of Birdie's life.

Birdie was treasured and will be held in cherished memory by all whose lives were blessed by her kindness and love.

Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held today Friday, November 16, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., at St. Theodore's Catholic Church, 116 Belden St., Gonzales, CA 93926.

Burial will follow at the Gonzales District Cemetery.
