Kathleen Harney Andrus
Kathleen Harney Andrus, 90, a life-long resident and native Californian, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2013. She died as a result of complications from pneumonia and aortic stenosis. The daughter of Clare and Tom Harney, Kathleen was born May 10, 1922, in King City.
Growing up in a sharecropping family during the Great Depression, Kathleen lived in various farming communities of Southern Monterey County, including King City, Soledad, and Gonzales. She graduated from Gonzales High School.
While attending UCLA, Kathleen married Len Hughes Andrus whom she had known since elementary school days in King City. During the time her husband was completing his medical degree in Washington, DC, at George Washington University, she worked as an assistant to J. Edgar Hoover of the FBI. She was always very proud of her service to her country during World War II.
As a parent, Kathleen provided sustained leadership in the local Parents Teachers Association, and an active supporter of education and sports in King City. She was also famous for organizing family dinner picnics while helping with patient house calls. One of her dear friends remarked that Kathleen was, "one of the most honest persons I have ever met." Later in life she became an interior designer often providing her creative talents to family and friends at no charge..
Kathleen was fond of studying her family heritage that dates back to the early Spanish colonial days. She was a direct descendant of Senor Boronda, the first school master of the California coastal community, Yerba Buena, which is now known as San Francisco. Her descendants settled in the Carmel Valley upon receiving a Spanish land grant. Her great-great uncle, Tiburcio Vasquez, became a local legend, after the Spanish American war resulted in the family land being ceded to America.
Kathleen is survived by three of her four children, Dr. Dan Len Andrus of Fallbrook (Susan), Dr. Jon Kim Andrus of Washington, DC (Susan Bancroft Leavitt); and Kathleen Hughes Andrus, FNP, of Sacramento. She was predeceased in 2010 by her son, Jeff Andrus (Gwynneth), author and script writer.
Her sons, Dan and Jon, and daughter, Keenie, will sorely miss her for her amazing honesty, family loyalty, and dedication to loved ones. She was a loving grandmother to 10 grandchildren (Dan - 4), (Jeff - 2), (Jon - 2), and (Keenie - 2); and to nine great-grandchildren.
