Bill Lauderdale Obituary

Bill Lauderdale

Bill Lauderdale, 95, formerly of Prunedale and lately a resident of Emeritus Memory Care Facility in Salinas, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013 after a long illness with Alzheimer's Disease. He was born November 3, 1917, in Wade, OK.

One of four children born to Barbara Ann and Pearl Lauderdale, he had nine other half-sisters and brothers, all children of Barbara Lauderdale. During the Great Depression the family moved from Oklahoma to Moss Landing. As the fourth oldest child, Bill left school when he was very young, about 7 or 8 years old, to help his mother and siblings. He was always a hard worker, traveling the rails around the southwest

doing whatever farming jobs he could find. He spent most of his adult life working on construction jobs and operating large equipment. He served in the Army during WWII where he was sent to Italy and Africa. After the war he moved to San Jose where he met his wife, Isabel Lauderdale (Ledesma), who was from Oxnard. They lived in the Bay Area many years before moving in 1981 to build their dream home on five acres of land in Prunedale.

Bill and Isabel loved entertaining friends and family at their home. While they never had children of their own they were God-parents to numerous children of others.

Bill was charming, friendly, and devoted to his darling, Isabel. He never met a story he didn't enjoy telling to anyone who happened to be near.

Bill was a member of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Castroville, Operating Engineers, the local Knights of Columbus, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; all of his siblings except two, and his wife, Isabel.

He is survived by Sam Mendenhall (wife, Billy) of Tollhouse and Marion (Jean) Morris of Copperas Cove, TX; plus numerous nieces and nephews.

We wish to thank the staff at Emeritus Memory Care in Salinas and the Visiting Nurses Association for the wonderful care they gave Bill. We also want to thank his special "angel", Rose Mary Downey, who visited Bill several times a week for more than six years, overseeing the caregivers at home and continuing to visit after he moved to Emeritus.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2013 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m., both at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis, Salinas, CA 93901.

Funeral Mass and Burial will be held Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., at the Chapel at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, CA 93907.
