Palmer E. "Buddy"
Palmer E. "Buddy" Wheeler, 72, of Salinas, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Buddy was a country music disc jockey (KTOM, KRKC, KIDD, etc.) for nearly three decades, but his true love was playing bass guitar and singing in various country & western bands (Sammy Dee & Co., Cimarron, Shiloh, Crossroads, Old Habits), which, in addition to their regularly scheduled gigs, performed at numerous local venues (Salinas Rodeo, Sheriff's Posse Grounds, Monterey County Fairgrounds, etc.) and celebrity charity events.
To know Buddy was to love him, simply because he never met a stranger. He was a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, brother, friend and partner. He was always ready with a quick laugh and a friendly gesture, complemented by his honest bright blue eyes. Buddy treated everyone respectfully and never met anyone whose life he didn't touch. Buddy loved telling funny stories and bringing smiles to people's faces, and was always ready to break into song. As he signed off from his radio show so many times, "Happiness on ya'!"
Buddy Wheeler was born November 16, 1940 in Antlers, OK, to the late Roy and Marie Wheeler. Buddy, who graduated from Salinas High School in 1959, is survived by his partner, Kathy Carson; older brother, Bob (Gail) of Redding; sons, Gregory Parrish (Maria), Christopher and Cameron Wheeler; grandchildren, Mikaela, James, Zachary, and Alexander; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Buddy was predeceased by his older sister, Joann; younger brother, Wayne and daughter, Traci Wheeler Harriss.
A Celebration of Life to honor Buddy will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Monterey Moose Lodge No. 876, 555 Canyon Del Rey Blvd., Del Rey Oaks.
