W. Thompson


John "Smokey" Winton Thompson, 77, of Salinas, passed peacefully at home Thursday, August 1, 2013, with his family by his side.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Thompson. John spent 42 years of his life dedicated to military service, where he retired as a 1SG.

John earned his nickname, "Smokey", after the tank he commanded caught on fire. After retiring from the military, he continued his hobby as a locksmith, and opened his business, "SMO-KEY Service. Smokey enjoyed listened to a variety of music and spending time with his family and loved ones. His compassion and loving ways made a perfect stranger to become a friend. He was a member of the Salinas Host Lions, Salinas Elk's Lodge and American Legion Post No. 31. He also dedicated time to the Salvation Army.

He is survived by his children, Steven (Terry) Thompson and daughter, Kimberely (Ronnie) Rehn; adopted son, Michael (Karen) McIntosh; grandchildren, Stephanie (Kyle) Susidko, Samantha Thompson, Paige Rehn, Jessica and Eric Romero; great-grandson, Austin Susidko; brother, Clark (Annette) Thompson; and sister, Charlotte Peterson.

The family would like to "thank always best care for their in home support of John in his last few months, and especially Laura Davis for her dedication to his care, also Alliance Home Health".

A Celebration of Life will be held, with full Military Honors, on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at 1 p.m., at the Salinas Sports Complex Banquet Hall located at 1034 N. Main St., Salinas, CA 93906. This will be a potluck affair, so please bring a dish.
