William Rush Gardner, Jr., 85, born March 13, 1928 to Dr. William Rush Gardner and Mary Tipton Foster Gardner of Hillsville, died Saturday, August 17, 2013 in Richmond. Rush married Dorothy Selden Warner on August 22, 1950. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, William Rush Gardner III and wife Lynn; daughter, Dorothy Aikin and husband, Donald; grandchildren, Samuel Aikin and fiancée Katrina Tordillo, Dorothy Aikin, and Katherine Gardner and fiancé Cody Williams; nephew, George Shaffer, niece Ann Shaffer Grisdale and husband Ernest and niece Katie Shaffer McAleer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Pearce Foster Gardner and sister, Joana Belle Gardner Shaffer. Rush graduated from Hillsville High School and enjoyed attending reunions with classmates. He attended the University of Richmond studying history. He was a farmer at Sunnyside Farm in Dunnsville and managed Gardner Realty in Tappahannock. He was a member of the Rappahannock Christian Church, the Ruritan Club, the Tappahannock Warsaw Moose Lodge, and was a past President of the Board of Realtors. Graveside services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Millers Tavern on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, P O Box 278, Millers Tavern, VA 23115 or Riverside Tappahannock Hospice, 289 Hospital Road, Tappahannock, VA 22560.
