Helen Elizabeth Shick, 91, New Bethlehem, passed away Tuesday evening, Sept. 15, 2015, at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She was born Oct. 22, 1923, as Helen Stewart at her family home in Huey, above her father's general store.
She grew up in Mayport on the family farm, and graduated from Hawthorn High School.
She later moved to Buffalo, N.Y., where she attended cosmetology school.
On Oct. 25, 1946, she married her high school friend, Robert Dale Shick, and settled in South Bethlehem, later, they moved to Penn Street in New Bethlehem to raise her family.
Helen was very active in her community.
She was co-owner of Robert's Men's Shop, with her husband from 1961 to 1981. Later, she worked in various retail clothing stores.
She had been an active member of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years and served in various offices.
Helen was a busy member of the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, having served as an elder for three years and as a deacon for three years. She also served on various other church committees.
Helen was on a local bowling team for 18 years and a member of the local Red Hats Society.
She loved to make quilts in her spare time.
Helen is survived by three daughters: Peggy Postlewait and her husband, John, of Mayport; Bobbie Boyer and her husband, Clifford, of Butler; and Vivian Dailey of Texas; a daughter-in-law, Jean Shick of Butler; eight grandchildren: Curtis Slagle and fiance' Kim, Brady Slagle and wife Amy, Bryan Postlewait and wife Amanda, Kevin Jacklin and wife Jillian, Elizabeth Dailey and friend Alex, Patrick Shick, Matthew Dailey Laurena Shick; and two great-grandchildren, Shaun and Axel Jacklin.
She is also survived by two sisters, Kay Platt and Marilyn Henry; and three brothers: Brady Stewart, Donald Stewart and Robert Stewart.
In addition to her parents, Donald and Margaret Ellen (Jones) Stewart, Helen was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Shick; daughter, Lynda Slagle; son, Terry Shick; and a brother, James Stewart. She will be sadly missed by her family.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Sept.18, 2015, at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sarah Heppenstall officiating. Interment will be in the New Bethlehem Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church at 403 Penn St. New Bethlehem, Pa. 16242.
