John Richard Carey, age 68, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014 at his home.
Born Feb. 27, 1946, in DuBois, Pa., he was the son of the late James J. and Alice McCallion Carey.
John retired in 2002 as a major from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections in Camp Hill with over 31 years of dedicated service. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving during the Vietnam War and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mechanicsburg, the Knights of Columbus #4068 Our Lady of Queenship Council, Eureka-West Shore Lodge No. 302 F&AM, and the American Legion Post 109, Mechanicsburg. John also held lifetime memberships with Goodwill Hose Company No. 5, and VFW Post 813, both of DuBois. In addition, John was a member of the York County Republican Committee often volunteering with the voting polls.
John is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Dottie Karesky Carey; a son, Bill Carey and his wife Bobbi of Mechanicsburg; a daughter, Alicia Carey-Hertzler and her husband Rodney of Etters; a sister, Janis Wack of Victoria, Min., as well as his four adoring grandchildren: Melaina and Maura Carey, Kaleb and Lyndi Hertzler.
John was preceded in death by his twin brother, James Carey.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mechanicsburg. Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Malpezzi Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
