Mary Elizabeth Scherer, 80, Lancaster, passed away peacefully to be with her Savior on April 14, 2015, at the Mennonite Home in Lancaster with her loving family by her side.
Born Sept. 22, 1934, in Reynoldsville, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Adelaide Spears. She graduated from Reynoldsville High School in 1952.
Mary was the loving wife of Russell Joseph Scherer for the last 23 years.
In addition to raising her children, she also had a successful professional career which included assignment as secretary to the Dean at the DuBois Undergraduate Center, Penn State; working in administrative positions at Goodwill Industries, and prior to retiring was office manager for Ophthalmologist Dr. William Hill and Associates in DuBois for 18 years.
She was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Cultural Resources Inc., (CRI) serving as treasurer. She also served on the Student Advisory Committee at the DuBois Business College.
For most of her adult life she was a faithful member of the Lakeside Methodist Church in DuBois, where she was active in many church-related activities including: chairwoman of the Trustees and member of the Chancel Choir, Outreach Dinner and Fund Raising committees.
Her hobbies included golf, spending time with her four grandchildren, gardening, dancing, and active participation in many civic functions including the DuBois Community Christian Choir and Agape Community Services.
She is survived by her husband, Russell; her sister, Marjorie Murdock of DuBois; her son, Robert Timothy Reay of Aurora, Ill.; and her daughter, Vickie Reay Hilton of Lancaster; and four grandchildren: Stephanie Reay of Chicago, Ill.., Suzanne Reay of Aurora, Ill., Jacqueline Hilton and Darian Hilton of Lancaster; stepdaughters, Cynthia Sculuca of Moon Township, Heidi Campbell of Cape Coral, Fla.; and stepsons, Gary Scherer of Camp Hill and Noah Scherer of Cape Coral, Fla.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Irving Reay (30 year marriage); a sister, Vivian Casey; and two brothers, Paul Spears and James Spears.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service to celebrate Mary's life at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 23, 2015, at the Lakeside United Methodist Church, 420 First St., DuBois with Pastor Bob Zilhaver officiating.
Mary's family was so appreciative for the kind and compassionate care she received during her illness at the Mennonite Home and from Hospice & Community Care of Lancaster.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Lakeside United Methodist Church, Raise for Praise Project, 420 First St., DuBois, PA 15801.
