Richard "Dick" H. Butler, 87, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016.
Dick was born on April 5, 1929, in Salamanca, N.Y., a son of the late Lawrence William and Catherine Louise (Fuller) Butler. He married Mary Carol Leap on May 7, 1955. Mary survives and resides in Punxsutawney.
Dick was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean War. Following service to his country, he went to work for Bell Telephone (Verizon) as a lineman retiring after 37 years.
In retirement, Dick remained very active and was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Anita, the Punxsutawney Loyal Order of the Moose #954, the Sykesville American Legion Post #345, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and was a life member of the National Rifleman Association. He enjoyed hunting, the outdoors, and particularly liked spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Although immersed in a myriad of activities and hobbies, the biggest thing which brought him the most joy were the little things. Dick loved babies, children, puppies, kittens, and all the precious little treasures that warmed his heart. Dick was known by his family as a "baby hog" because he wouldn't let go once he held them.
Dick is survived by his wife Mary of 61 years, his four children: Mary Catherine Stahlman and her husband Steven of York, Pa., Richard M. Butler and his wife Cindy of Punxsutawney, Ann Butler of Punxsutawney, and Michelle "Shelly" Dixon and her husband Bill of Punxsutawney. He is also survived by a brother, Lawrence Butler and his wife Anna Ruth of Hawthorne and a sister, Marjorie Leap of Clearfield. His eight grandchildren are: Sarah and Rachel Stahlman, Beth Valentin, Erin, Luke, and Colton Butler, and Morgan and Jonathon Dixon. Dick is also survived by three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his sister, Ivis Voyten and three brothers, Robert, James, and Donald Butler.
Friends and family will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc. of Punxsutawney. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church officiated by Monsignor Joseph Riccardo.
Dick will be interred at the Anita-Adrian Roman Catholic Cemetery.
