Russell Laverne Swackhammer, 80, of Gardner Hill Road, Weedville, died unexpectedly at home Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015.
He was born in Benezette on Sept. 19, 1934, to the late David and Mildred English Swackhammer. Russell married Eileen Beck on Jan. 8, 1955, in the Penfield Free Methodist Church. He survived Eileen's passing away on Feb. 24, 1975, along with their children, Ralph (Sandy) Swackhammer of Gardner Hill, Richard "Dutch" (Debbie) Swackhammer of St. Marys and Faye (Paul) Lucore of Weedville.
On June 24, 1978, in the Weedville Wesleyan Church, Russell married Helen Barnett, who survives at home. He is also survived by their two children, Raymond (Nicole) Swackhammer of DuBois and Lisa Swackhammer of Washington, D.C. Russell's other surviving family includes six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren and his first great-grandchild, expected in March; his sister Dora, Mrs. John DeCarli of Byrnedale; a brother, Arley Swackhammer of Benezette; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ila G. Kraus; five brothers: Donald, Merlyn, Leon, Joel and DeMonte Swackhammer; and three siblings in infancy.
Russell attended Benezette Schools, graduated from Weedville High School and also the DuBois Business College.
He served in the Army, in France, from 1953 to 1956.
Russell worked at Airco-Spear and retired from the sales team at Burkes True Value.
Being an avid sports fan, he played baseball and softball in the Army and many years in the valley and church softball leagues. He was also known for being an umpire for the legion baseball and softball and for his enjoyment of reading and crosswords.
Russell was a member of the Weedville Wesleyan Church and lived 54 years in Bennett's Valley.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home in Penfield, and also from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the Weedville Wesleyan Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church and will include military honors accorded by the Valley Legion Post 978 Burial Detail. Burial will take place in Gardner Hill Cemetery, Weedville.
