Ethel LaRue Spence Thayer of Erie passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014. Still living independently at the age of 98, Ethel inspired many with her warm smile and graceful nature.

Born in Sigel on April 12, 1915, Ethel was a longtime resident of Erie. She graduated from Sigel High School in Jefferson County and graduated from Oil City Business College in Oil City. Ethel worked at a law firm in Oil City until marrying her husband, William L. Thayer, former vice president of Autoclave Engineering.
In addition to her parents, Nettie Irene Hidinger and Benjamin Harrison Spence, she was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Thayer, and her brothers: Kenneth, Wayne, David, Frederick, Lester and Floyd Spence.
Ethel enjoyed gardening in her yard, walking at Presque Isle State Park and hiking through the woods. She was a member of the Presque Isle Doll Club and loved collecting dolls. A gifted seamstress and an experienced traveler, she enjoyed all things life had to offer. Ethel was a kind and generous person, and will be remembered as a loving mother, a devoted grandmother and a caring friend.
Ethel is survived by her sister, Phalla Scott, her brother, Wade Spence of Titusville, her three sons: William L. Thayer Jr. and his wife, Carole, of Erie, Dr. David O. Thayer and his wife, Charmaine, of Boulder, Colo., Allan R. Thayer and his wife, Shelley, of Erie; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service to remember Ethel on July 26, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church located at 216 North Franklin St. in Titusville.
