On June 5, 2013, Carlo Panera calmly, and lovingly, told his family, "God wants me to come live with him." On June 10, 2013, Carlo willingly accepted this invitation, and with his loving wife Martha by his side and holding his hand, peacefully passed from this world. His two sons, Aldo and Gregory, were also present, as was his daughter-in-law Sarah. Carlo's brother Gregory, daughter Dawn, and grandchildren Alli, Kristal, and Kyle were there in spirit, and their love and prayers were felt by all. His parents Anna and Aldo awaited him on the other side.
Carlo and Martha were married on March 13, 1964, and grew closer with every one of their 49 years together. Carlo, in typical Manhattan-native-born style, lived life to the fullest. He was an avid cyclist, music lover and food fanatic who loved to cook and eat spicy meals with loved ones. He loved to dance, ski, kayak and snowboard. He was a Coast Guard veteran, who later served as a New Jersey state trooper for 20 years, before becoming a general contractor, operating Country Homes of NJ Inc. He loved, and traveled often to Mexico, so his impressively large circle of close, personal friends crosses national boundaries, and the outpouring of their love and support in his 11-month long battle with cancer was both humbling and inspiring.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no traditional burial service, and instead there will be a "Big Chill" party where all of his friends, who are able to attend, are invited to eat, laugh, and celebrate the memory of their cherished friend. Carlo will be missed, but he will never be forgotten.
