Joan C. Allen

Joan C. Allen, 70, of Temple, Texas, and formerly of Millville, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, in Temple.

Joan was born on Sept. 22, 1942, to the Rev. P. Richmond and Dorothy F. Comer. She is survived by her daughter, Barbra Christner and her husband Weber Otaviano, and two grandsons, Zachary and Derek, all of Marietta, Ga.; her brother, John Comer and his wife Alberta of Salt Lake City, Utah; her brother-in-law, Sam Dilks of Cherry Hill; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Eleanor Dilks.

Joan grew up in several New Jersey towns, including Hightstown, Absecon, Gloucester and Millville. She graduated from Millville High School in 1960 and attended Pfeiffer University in North Carolina and Emory University in Georgia, where she studied nursing and served as the president of her senior nursing class. She lived in Temple for years and had many dear friends there. Joan loved to read and she loved cats. Joan also loved to send and receive letters, and kept in touch with many lifelong friends using her two electric typewriters.

Services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Rocap Shannon Memorial Funeral Home of Millville. Burial will follow in the Friendship Cemetery of Buena. Relatives and friends will be received at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 until 2 p.m. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C.; Methodist Children's Home in Waco, Texas; or St. Paul United Methodist Church in Temple, Texas.
