James W. Cowan Jr., 87, of Vineland died Sunday, July 28, 2013, at Inspira Hospicecare Inc., Bridgeton. Born in Woodbury, he moved to Vineland in 1963 from Salem.
He was a land surveyor for the city of Vineland for 30 years and, after retirement in 1986, he continued as a self-employed land surveyor. James was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. He enjoyed playing golf and telling jokes and stories. James also was an avid reader and a Civil War buff.
He was predeceased by his parents, James W. Cowan Sr. and Helen (Wicks); and brother-in-law, William Greenawalt.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elaine (Bergamo) Cowan of Vineland; two sons, James P. Cowan of Vineland, and Timothy M. Cowan and wife Susan Parish of Sudbury, Mass.; one daughter, Helen Cowan Margiotti and husband Dominic of Vineland; two grandchildren, Claire and Mara Parish Cowan; one sister, Virginia Greenawalt of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish, St. Isidore's Church, Vineland. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, East Vineland. Friends will be received on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the DeMarco-Luisi Funeral Home, 2755 S.
