Barry Lee Casper, 72, of Hopewell Township died Wednesday evening November 6, 2013 at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center in Camden following 30 days of hospitalization. Born June 21, 1941 in Woodbury, he was the son of Clara (nee Shales) Casper Gandy of Bridgeton and the late Francis W. Casper Sr. He and his wife Shirley Mae (nee Reed) Casper were married September 15, 1963 and just celebrated being married for 50 years. Barry was a Bridgeton resident all his life and graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1960. In 1961 he entered the US Navy and served aboard the USS Enterprise, which was the first nuclear powered air craft carrier. He sailed around the world twice and was at sea during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was discharged to the Naval Reserves in 1965. He was employed by West Company in Millville as a shift supervisor for 28 years. In his retirement, Barry enjoyed delivering the Cumberland Salem Guide for the last ten years. An avid boater on the Cohansey River for 46 years, he kept his boat at Hancock's Harbor in Greenwich. He enjoyed both sail and power boats and for the last 16 years had the pontoon boat, "Fine Toon."
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two children, Kenneth Casper (Judy) of Cape May Court House and Sherri Casper (Keith Rule) of Millville, four grandsons, Alex, Jarred and Ben Casper and Daniel Rule, one brother, Francis W. Casper Jr. (Susan), one sister, Pat Riley (Bruce) and several nieces and nephews. Besides his father, Barry was predeceased by his step-father, Earl Gandy and step-mother, Charlotte Casper.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service with military honors at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Tuesday afternoon November 12th at 1 o'clock. Rev. Walter Kellen of the Friendship-Finley United Methodist Church will officiate. The interment will occur privately at the Cumberland County Veteran's Cemetery in Hopewell Township.
