Dana E. Sebald Obituary
Dana E. Sebald, 86, of Coldwater, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at the Laurels of Coldwater after a long illness.

A funeral will be held on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor David Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 15, 2013 from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., also at the funeral home.

Dana was born in Ann Arbor on June 21, 1927, on of twin boys born to Herbert A. and Mary L. (Bishop) Sebald. Dana shared a life-long deep and unspoken bond with his twin brother, Craig. In his pre-teen years, Dana and Craig spent their winters in Clearwater, Florida where the family owned a second home. In 1943 his parents purchased "the farm" on the outskirts of Coldwater that was a very important place to Dana throughout his life, and is still in his family today.

Dana graduated from Coldwater High School in 1945, where he played football. Immediately out of high school, Dana and Craig joined the US Navy, where they served together until 1946. They served together on a mine sweeper in the Philippines. Following the Navy, Dana attended the New Hampton College in New Hampshire and Michigan State University where he graduated with a degree in forestry. Dana loved the out-of-doors.

Dana married Marjorie White on April 4, 1959 at the Coldwater United Methodist Church. They had one daughter, Janna, born in 1961.

Dana worked many years at Federal Mogul, until its closing. He then held several jobs before becoming employed at the Coldwater Regional Center, from where he retired. His favorite in-between job was transporting Southwind motor homes to Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio. He loved the open road.

Dana was a humble, gentle and responsible man. He possessed a wonderful sense of humor. Some remember that he always had a smile on his face.

Dana loved gardening, from the many roses he grew to his vegetable garden at the farm. He loved animals and faithfully fed the birds and squirrels for many years. There was always a cat or dog wanting to sit by, or on him.

Dana had deep roots at the farm and loved puttering there. He loved water and was blessed to have spent most of his life on the North Chain of Lakes in Coldwater.

He loved sailing and going on the pontoon. He was an avid duck hunter for many years until ill health kept him out of the blind. This was a love he shared with his brother and had many good memories of their duck hunting days.

He also loved recording the daily weather and had two calendars, one for the current year and one for the past year where he could compare the two. He loved old country music and was most happy at home, listening to his music. He was also a faithful member of the Coldwater United Methodist Church where he had perfect attendance for many years.

Dana is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie, his daughter Janna and son-in-law Kim Kaechele, brother Craig (Rita) Sebald of Coldwater, niece Cindy (Andy VanDoren) Sebald, nephew Randy Sebald, and his name sake niece Dana Sebald-VanDoren, among other nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to the Human Society of Branch County, Pines Senior Respite Activities Fund or the Branch County Food Bank.
