Derald W. "Salty" Saltzgaber Obituary
Derald W. "Salty" Saltzgaber, 83, of Tekonsha passed away on August 3, 2014 at Bronson Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

Derald was born on February 5, 1931 in Grass Lake to Harvey and Elsie (Everett) Saltzgaber, where he grew up and worked on the family farm. He attended school in Jackson and graduated with the Class of 1949. During school Derald was involved in the Future Farmers of America Program(FFA).

Derald then served in the Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict as a Military Police Officer in Berlin. He continued to serve in the Army Reserves from 1953-1961.

Derald met Johanne Sherwood during high school. They were high school sweethearts and married on February 14, 1952 in Jackson. They celebrated 62 years together this year.

Derald worked with the Michigan State Police as a Trooper, then Sergeant for 31 years at various Posts. He began his career in Erie and then was transferred to several Posts which included; Marquette, Gaylord, Tekonsha, and Battle Creek. Derald retired from the Coldwater State Police Post in 1987.

He is remembered by those who worked with him as a Police Officer who had integrity and was well-respected.

From 1988-2010, Derald worked as a sales representative for the NYE Uniform Company out of Grand Rapids. Derald retired after 51 years of service in these professions and just prior to his 80th birthday, thus fulfilling his statement that he wanted to retire prior to turning 80.

Derald enjoyed gardening and wood working. He was actually quite an accomplished wood worker. Derald was a man who loved to spend the majority of his free time with his children, family, and friends. He also enjoyed being with his two dogs; Tiger and Angel.

Derald also enjoyed talking and listening to many members of the community.

He is survived by his wife, Johanne of Tekonsha; five children, Karen (Keith) Cronk of Kinderhook, Susan (Tom) Magocs of Coldwater, Dianne (Jerry) VandenHout of Coldwater, Douglas (Kerri) Saltzgaber of Dorr, and Brian (Andrea) Saltzgaber of Fremont, Indiana; fourteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; brother, Dale Saltzgaber of Lansing; and a sister, Phyllis Saltzgaber of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son; Mark in 1993.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Derald's life will be held on Saturday, August 9th at 11:00AM at the Craig K. Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Marshall Chapel, 723 US 27 North with Father Mark J. Vyverman officiating the service. Interment will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery of Tekonsha.

A luncheon will be held at the First Baptist Church of Tekonsha, 914 N. Main Street, Tekonsha following the interment.

Memorials in memory of Derald can be made out to the Tekonsha Athletic Department or Tekonsha Fire Department.
