M. Roger "Chief" Tappenden Obituary
M. Roger Tappenden, "Chief", 90, of Coldwater, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at his home.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church in Coldwater with Pastor David Pierce officiating, interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Girard with military honors provided by the American Legion, Post #52, Drill Team. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, beginning at 9:00 AM at the Church. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.

Roger was born February 23, 1924 in Coldwater, MI to Morris "Dyke" & Elspeth (Rattray) Tappenden. He graduated from Coldwater High School in 1943 and served in the US Marine Corp during WWII. Roger married Violet J. Clark on Nov. 11, 1946 in Coldwater and together they've celebrated 67 years.

Mr. Tappenden began his career in law enforcement with the Branch Co. Sheriff's Dept from 1955 – 1958. He went to work briefly at the Coldwater Regional Center then joined the Coldwater Police Dept. in April of 1960. Roger continued to further his education in criminal justice with degrees from KCC and Western MI University, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and was always attending classes to upgrade his knowledge. Mr. Tappenden became Chief of Police for the Coldwater Department in Dec. 1973 and served until his retirement on March 30, 1984.

Roger was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening and had a great love of hunting and fishing. He loved people and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Roger is survived by his wife Violet, his daughters Lynda (Gary) Pearson of Quincy, Susan Hoffman of Jenison, Joyce Tappenden-Duvall of Destin, FL, his grandchildren Tim Pearson, Tara Maurer, Adam Pearson, Amy Hoffman, Amanda Pattok, Elissa Bauer, Erica Zebolsky and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Ruth Engle.

Memorials may be directed to the Chief Roger Tappenden Memorial Fund for the Coldwater Police Department.
