Sylvia Darrow Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 10 to Apr. 11, 2013.

Sylvia Darrow, 74, of Canton, Pa., passed away while surrounded by family and friends on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pa.

Sylvia Jean Darrow was born on Oct. 18, 1939, in Renovo, Pa., the daughter of the late John and Jean (Huff) Monoski. After graduating from Williamsport High School with the class of 1956, Sylvia earned a bachelors of science degree from Mansfield University.

Sylvia was the devoted wife of Benjamin Lee "Ben" Darrow for nearly 50 years. She was also a supportive mother and grandmother of three children and five grandchildren who she was very proud of. A well-liked teacher at Canton Area Schools, Sylvia encouraged all her students' interests. She started her nearly 30-year teaching career at Ogdensburg, moved to the LeRoy School and then taught at Canton Elementary as a sixth-grade teacher. One of the things Mrs. Darrow especially enjoyed during her years of educating was directing her students in the spring musical programs.

Sylvia was a member of Canton's Women of the Moose Lodge 981 and V.F.W. Post 714, Morris Run's V.F.W. Post 167, Troy's V.F.W. Post 8675 and the Wheel Inn Club, Roaring Branch. A friendly and outgoing person, she enjoyed times shared with family and friends. Sylvia and Ben also traveled and went on several cruises. One could usually find them playing cards in a Euchre game or at a Euchre tournament in the area. In earlier years, she enjoyed camping, boating and snowmobiling.

Surviving are her children, Lisa Eagleberger of Williamsport, Benjamin J. (Kimberly) Darrow of Harrisburg and Tara (William) Amwake of Mantua, N.J.; five grandchildren, Jacob T., Olivia R., Samantha J., Abigail L. and Megan R.; also several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

In addition to her husband Ben, who passed away on March 28, 2010, Sylvia was predeceased by her son-in-law, Daniel Eagleberger and a brother, John Monoski.

Her family invites friends to call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Dr. in Canton. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. followed by burial in North Union Cemetery.

Those who wish may consider a memorial in Mrs. Darrow's name to a charity of one's choice.

I am so sorry for your loss. I not only enjoyed being one of her students, but also enjoyed her company at card tournaments later in life.
