Catherine Shertz

On the evening of Wednesday, March 12, 2014, Canton native Catherine Jane (Brass) (English) Shertz passed away quietly at Bradford County Manor. She was 92 years of age. Born in Canton on Jan. 16, 1922, she was the daughter of Samuel W. and Agnes (Hawkins) Brass. Catherine was employed for many years as a machine operator at Canton Manufacturing Co. She was active in her community as a member of the Village Improvement Association, having served two terms as president. In 2001 she was chosen Woman Of The Year. Catherine also was active in the Canton Women Of The Moose where she served as Past Regent of the College of Regents. She was also the founder of the Foxy Red Hatters in Canton. Catherine enjoyed singing and was an active member of the Canton Music Club. She was skilled at crocheting afghans and often gave them as gifts to family and friends. She was an avid reader and enjoyed working in her flower garden. She also had a special place in her heart for her cats. Catherine was a friendly, soft-spoken lady with a subtle smile and a sparkle in her eye, and will be missed by the many lives she touched.

She is survived by her son, Leon D. English Jr. of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sister Marie Bartlett of Tioga, Pa.; special friend Nancy Parker of Manheim, Pa.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Agnes Brass; husbands Leon D. English Sr., and William Shertz; brothers James and Kenneth Brass; and brother-in-law Harold Bartlett.

Calling hours will be Monday, March 17 from 10 a.m. to noon at Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, 94 N. Center Street, Canton. Services will follow at noon with Fr. Michael McCormick and Pastor Jerry Schmidt officiating. Interment will follow in Beech Flats Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Bradford County Humane Society, P.O.
