Charles W. "Bubby" Place Sr., 80, of the Colonial Towers, Towanda, Pa., passed away Monday morning, June 16, 2014 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital, Towanda, Pa.
Charles was born in Towanda on June 6, 1934, the son of Harry Place Sr. and Eleanor Vanderpool Place. He was a graduate of Towanda High School class of 1953 and was subsequently employed by the Pennsylvania Dept. of Highways in Towanda. Charles served in the U.S. Navy
from 1954 to 1958 during the Korean War
. Following completion of his military service, he returned home to Towanda and was employed by Sylvania Electric for 33 years until his retirement. Charles was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a friend to many. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener and woodworker. Charles was a former member of the Bridge Street Hill Rod and Gun Club.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Beverly Travis Place whom he married on April 12, 1956; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles William Place Jr. and Carol Place of Towanda, Steven A. Place and Robin Place of Towanda; grandchildren, Kelly Place, Michelle Place, Stephanie Parker, Stacy Parker; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Stella Jones of Towanda, Betty Steitzer and husband Joseph of Monroeton, Debbie Kissell and husband Craig of Lake Carey, Pa.; brothers, Harry Place Jr. and wife Teresa of Towanda, David Place and fiancée Betty Morse of Lake Carey, Pa.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Diana Lynn Place in 1960; a daughter, Julia Renee Place Saxbury in 1990; and a nephew, Brian Steitzer.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave. Towanda, Pa. A graveside service will follow at Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills, Pa. with Rev. Thomas Geiger pastor of the Assembly of God Church, Towanda, officiating. Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 will accord full military honors at the cemetery.
