Gerard D. Corbett, 86, well-known and highly regarded area businessman of 971 Summit Road, Towanda, Pa., North Towanda Township, passed away Friday afternoon, Aug. 23, 2013, at his home following declining health.
Gerard was born in "Toy Town," Towanda, Pa., on May 27, 1927, the son of Paul and Thressa Adams Corbett. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy
in April of 1945 and in June of 1945 graduated in absentia from Towanda High School. He was the honored high school senior recipient of the American Legion Award. Gerard completed basic training at the Sampson, N.Y. Naval Base and was subsequently transferred to the Philippines and thereafter to China where he served during World War II
. He received his honorable discharge from the Navy in August of 1946 and in September of that year began continuing his education at Penn State University
. Gerard later attended the Lowell Business School in Binghamton, N.Y., graduating in June of 1949. In August of 1949, Gerard became associated with the Henry E. Dunn Insurance Agency in Towanda and was later re-called to serve in the Navy as recruiting officer in Philadelphia, Pa. for a year. Following completion of his military service, Gerard returned to Towanda to continue his prior employment with the insurance agency.
On Aug. 9, 1951, he married J. June Benjamin in Towanda. Soon after the passing of Henry E. Dunn in 1969, Gerard was promoted to the office of President of Henry Dunn, Inc. and later served as Chief Executive Officer for the company until his retirement in June of 1992. Gerard was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Towanda, a founding member and past president of the Bradford County Outboard Motor Club and member of the Towanda Gun Club, Beirne-Webster VFW
Post 1568, Towanda, and life member of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42. Gerard was a past president of the Towanda School Board. In earlier years, he enjoyed boating, waterskiing, camping and traveling with his wife, June.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kay C. and Samuel Kintner of Towanda; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin C. and Kim L. Corbett of Towanda; his grandchildren, Kyle Kintner and wife Christine, Kacie Kintner Ferraro and husband David, Hayley Corbett, Meredith Corbett and Daniel Corbett; brother and sister-in-law, Jack R. and Jan Corbett of Towanda; sister, Gytha Corbett of Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Helen Landmesser of Towanda, Barbara Benjamin of Towanda, Louise Benjamin of Durell and Tess Benjamin of Florida; as well as several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, June, on Nov. 17, 2010; and by a nephew, Duane Corbett in 1973.
A requiem mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at Christ Episcopal Church, 1 Main St., Towanda, Pa., with Rev. Maureen Hipple, rector, as celebrant. Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 will accord military honors at the church.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at the church.

Service arrangements are under the direction of the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, Towanda, Pa.
