Harold Lee Hess, 88, of Athens Township, Pa., passed away on Monday, May 6, 2013, at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa.
He was born Dec. 3, 1924, in Tannery Town, Sullivan County, Pa., the son of the late Robert Lee and Ethel Young Hess.
In the earlier years, Harold was employed by Lehigh Valley Railroad, AC Smith Auto Parts, and for 38 years he sold and repaired Electrolux Vacuum Cleaners. He was a member of the Pilgrim Holiness Church, serving on the board of trustees. He also taught Sunday school and was a member of the Sayre Sportsman Club.
Harold enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, hunting, playing cards and working with his hands; but most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Those that knew Harold recognized a caring and generous man, who went out of his way to share a smile or a kind word. With a wonderful sense of humor, even until his final days, he was making those around him laugh.
On May 27, 1946, he married the love of his life, Louise Lantz Hess. On May 27, 2012, Harold and Louise celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife Louise on March 22, 2013, a daughter Connie Lou Hess and son Eric Scott Hess.
Harold is survived by his sons Alton R. (Nancy) Hess of Millport, N.Y., and Preston L. (Rita) Hess of Seattle, Wash.; daughter Debbie Kay (Pat) Bailey of Towanda, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and family may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013, the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main St., Athens, Pa. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. John Musser officiating from the Pilgrim Holiness Church.
